Pragmatics and Semantics
Many contemporary pragmatics theories based on philosophy focus on semantics. For example, Brandom focuses on linguistic meaning (albeit from a pragmatic perspective).
Others take a more holistic view of pragmatics, such as relevance theory, which attempts to explore the understanding of the processes that lead to an utterance being made by a hearer. However, this approach tends to ignore other aspects of pragmatism, like epistemic debates on truth.
What is pragmatism, exactly?
Pragmatism is a viable alternative to continental philosophy and analytic philosophy. Charles Sanders Peirce was the first to introduce it and William James extended it. Later, Josiah Royce developed the philosophy. It had a profound effect on the areas of inquiry ranging from philosophy of theology to philosophy of science as well as ethics as well as philosophy of politics and language. The pragmatist tradition continues to grow.
The pragmatic principle is at the heart of classical pragmatics. It is a principle that clarifies the meaning of hypotheses via their 'practical implications' or their implications for the experiences of particular situations. Other topics in pragmatism are the relationship between beliefs and reality, the nature of human rationality, the role of virtues and values and the nature of life. Pragmatists also developed a variety of methods and ideas, including those in semiotics and the philosophy of language. They also have explored topics like philosophy of religion, philosophy and theology, ethics, and science. Some, such as Peirce or Royce are epistemological relativism, whereas others contend that this kind of relativism is a mistake. The latter half of the 20th century saw an increase in interest in classical pragmatics. This led to a myriad of new developments. These include a "near-side" pragmatics that is focused on the resolution of ambiguity, indexicals, demonstratives, and anaphors, as well as a "far-side" pragmatics that analyzes the semantics in discourses.

Semantics and Pragmatics can be seen as being on opposite sides of the continuum. On the close side, semantics is seen as a concept, whereas pragmatics is on the far side. Despite these difficulties, pragmatism continues its growth in its popularity throughout the world. It is a third alternative to analytic and Pragmatickr Continental philosophical traditions, and has a wide range of practical applications. It is a growing field of inquiry.
